WHY AM I IN YOUR COUNTRY?

We are also launching our podcast, Why Am I In Your Country?

Each episode features someone explaining what exactly drove them to leave their home, and what it’s like arriving in the UK, and living here as a refugee/asylum-seeker.

TROJANS UK 22-23-24-25 TOUR

Following on from eleven years of highly acclaimed productions, and commissioned by K+C Festival, Trojan Women Project is running a combined psycho-social support and advocacy drama project with the Chelsea Theatre, and, with the National Lottery Heritage Fund, in the Arts Centre Hounslow. We are applying for funding to take the project to other parts of the UK, culminating in a London performance tour.

WHAT WE DO

Refugees and migrants are often lonely, traumatised, making their way in a new world, and have extraordinary stories to tell: of courage, determination, and overcoming tragedy. We all are driven by the same desires for safety, for hope for our families, a future, a place to live. For some people that is harder to achieve than others.

We run community drama projects with refugees, building their stories into the text of a play (The Trojan Women) and staging their stories publicly at a high artistic level.

We provide a hot meal for the group and a creche for their kids - so the participants can make friends with each other - and access to psychological counselling. Where possible, we try and help our participants into employment or education. We’ve been doing this since 2013 in Jordan, Europe and the UK, including the highly acclaimed Queens of Syria 2016 Young Vic Tour and the 2019 Trojans at the Edinburgh Festival and our 2015 Oliver! In Arabic project in Jordan.

In 2022 we started the series of workshops and productions called Trojans UK 22-25, initially at the Playground Theatre in Kensington. The idea is that we develop a core play with refugee professional actors and tour the workshops to parts of the UK. The writing produced by the workshops will be put together with the core play and the professional refugee cast (2-3 actors). The ultimate aim is to pull together the resulting works into one production in London, with a rotating cast.

For the last two years we have been running a series of workshops at the Chelsea Theatre, in collaboration with Hammersmith and Fulham Council, culminating with plays at the Chelsea Theatre as part of K+C Festival and the HUSH Festival. We have participants from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Pakistan and other countries. Some of them were even professional performers in their previous lives. The participants are very keen to continue the project.

As of March 2024 we have been running drama workshops with the Arts Centre Hounslow, made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. In addition to the development of the play, we are creating an oral history archive to be housed in Hounslow at the Gunnersbury Park Museum, depicting a snapshot of life as an asylum seeker or refugee in Hounslow, and publicised by our Why Am I In Your Country? podcast.
